We often talk about one of our main values being sisterhood. To most people, this is an abstract concept. Sisterhood cannot be understood by the word alone. Sisterhood is defined through actions, support and care. At its best, sisterhood is powerful friendship based in female empowerment.
Several brands are tapping into messages of female empowerment in order to market their products. Special K asks women what they will gain when they lose, Dove shares messages about real beauty and, most recently, COVERGIRL has released a new campaign, #GirlsCan, featuring several empowering women such as Ellen DeGeneres, Katy Perry, P!nk, Janelle Monae, Queen Latifah, teen rapper Becky G and Sofia Vergara.
Each of these women, and so many more, are successful in their own right; and today, as women continue to reach new heights in all areas - businesses, media, the home, athletics and more - we see in growing numbers that behind the successful woman is someone, or many someones, who support her.
As we look towards exemplified powerful female friendships, we see several strong women in the media who champion the female empowerment movement - Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph, Courtney Cox and Jennifer Aniston, Oprah and Gayle. These women share friendships that, at least from the outside looking in, show support and encouragement. These are just a few female pairs that we see in the media that inspire us to be ourselves and dream big.
One of our favorite gal-pal duos is that of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. As they continue to break gender barriers with their comedic brilliance, they're also making an impact in our world. Tina wrote a New York Times Best Seller for which her book deal included a gift to Books for Kids, resulting in the construction of six libraries) and Amy co-founded "Smart Girls," encouraging young women to continue cultivating their authentic selves. The Huffington Post showcases nine lessons about being a woman that we learned from Amy and Tina (filled with great memes and gifs, of course). These lessons are reminders about what great friendships among women should be.
The Purpose tells us that we should work to cherish friendships with but a chosen few and to study the perfecting of those friendships. Perfecting friendships is where we see sisterhood happen.
"Female friendships that work are relationships in which women help each other belong to themselves." - Louise Bernikow
The perfect friendship allows you to cherish your friendship with your best self. As you're thinking about what that line of the Purpose means to you, think about how we come together as women in Alpha Gamma Delta - women who are striving to become the best versions of ourselves. We can help each other do that in bigger and better ways every day!
The best version of yourself should build your sisters up to also be the best versions of themselves. We encourage you to take some time today to remember the power of being connected to the Alpha Gamma Delta sisterhood and the thousands of empowering women all over the world.
