World Alzheimer's Month

Betty Ruth Edwards was initiated at Epsilon-University of Kentucky in 1941. Sadly, Betty was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2008 before passing away in 2011. While her daughters, Bettina and Frances Dickson, were caring for their mother, they learned that stuffed animals can stimulate feelings of security for a person with Alzheimer's.Bettina Frances Mom.jpg Stuffed animals actually calm nervousness and bring joy for these patients. Additionally, they can act as a point of reference and conversation starter.

Bettina and Frances decided to create their own company called Memorable Pets, in honor of their mother and to help promote the life quality of those living with Alzheimer's and dementia. Visit their website to learn more about Memorable Pets and Bettina and Frances's story. You can purchase a Memorable Pet for someone you know, or participate in the Pets 2 People program and purchase a Memorable Pet to be sent to a person in need.

There are over 36 million people worldwide living with dementia. Dementia describes any brain disorder that affects a person's memory, thinking, behavior and emotion. Alzheimer's is a leading cause of dementia, and we have a unique story about an Alpha Gam woman whose family created a business to help sustain the memory of those living with the disease.

September is World Alzheimer's Month, which was created by Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI). ADI decided that spreading Alzheimer's awareness across a month instead of just one day would allow individual Susie Spaniel.jpgawareness groups to have a larger reach in promoting their programs.

Alzheimer's is a disease affecting many people, including our own sisters. Many countries participate in World Alzheimer's Month through local events that raise awareness about Alzheimer's.

Consider participating in an event or checking out Memorable Pets, wherever you live! Many Alpha Gam sisters reside outside the North American borders, so participating in World Alzheimer's Month allows us to work together, both near and far, to impact the world.
