Paul Staley's Story

The email arrived from Seattle on a Friday afternoon from Paul Staley. His mother, Frances Elizabeth Cauble Staley, was a 1928 initiate of Eta Chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta. Frances, who entered Chapter Grand in 1999, had provided for a portion of her estate to benefit the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation if her son, Paul, pre-deceased her. After his mother's passing, it would have been easy for Paul to plan his estate according to his own wishes. Instead, Paul chose to honor his mother's wishes and include the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation in his own will in her memory.

Frances was born in 1909 in Chicago, Illinois. At DePauw University she majored in Romance Languages and was very active in Alpha Gamma Delta. She also served as President of Theta Sigma Phi (national women's journalism fraternity), worked on the yearbook and was a member of Mortar Board, Phi Sigma Iota (national romance language society), the newspaper editorial staff and the Student Affairs Committee. In addition to all of these activities, she was the President of her Senior Class.

In 1939 she married Paul E. Staley; and it is their one son, Paul, Jr. who traveled to the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation office this spring to share her story.

"I chose to honor my mother with a planned gift to the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation because of her lifelong love of the Fraternity. She had a wonderful lifetime of friendships with ΑΓΔ sisters both in the Seattle area and elsewhere throughout the U.S. Mother told numerous stories of how much she enjoyed her ΑΓΔ days at DePauw University. Her scrapbook of ΑΓΔ time at DePauw was something she held onto and talked about many times and for many years after her graduation. I believe that her personal values and strength were instilled in her through her membership in ΑΓΔ. Her personal values and character made her a very devoted wife and wonderful mother."

Thank you, Paul, for sharing your mother's story and for continuing her love of Alpha Gamma Delta.
