(INDIANAPOLIS) On Sunday, September 30, 285 women were welcomed to Alpha Gamma Delta sisterhood at University of South Carolina in Columbia, marking the largest colonization effort in Alpha Gamma Delta's history.

Throughout the colonization effort, Alpha Gamma Delta hosted several recruitment events: six infosessions, an open house during Parents Weekend, four days of interviews and five invitational events. The selection of 285 women brings Alpha Gamma Delta to a chapter size comparable to the other Greek groups on campus.

"The women I met during the colonization process repeatedly mentioned their desire to help others and to be dedicated to their studies. These women are leaders and scholars and will be the foundation of a great chapter for years to come," said Liz Harriss York, International Vice President-Extension. "I am so thankful for all of the efforts of our volunteers and staff members that worked together to make this a proud, historical moment for Alpha Gamma Delta Fraternity."

Focusing on the Fraternity's brand message, Live with Purpose, Alpha Gamma Delta used a values-based selection criterion that aligned with the Alpha Gamma Delta Purpose to ensure that the values of all new members paralleled the values and mission of the Fraternity. Campus public relation efforts directed students to a custom website for the South Carolina colony—goalphagam.com. A Facebook Fan Page, Twitter page and Twitter hashtag (#goalphagam) were also used to promote the organization. Members of the Greek community demonstrated their support as well; students wore tank tops, sunglasses, buttons and other merchandise that promoted Alpha Gamma Delta on campus.

"The Alpha Gamma Delta colonization at the University of South Carolina truly showed Greek unity at its finest. Everywhere you looked on our campus, you saw at least a little bit of Alpha Gamma Delta mixed in with the garnet and black [of South Carolina]," said Katie Spell, Assistant Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life at the University of South Carolina. "I see a lot of possibility with the group of women who now make up the founding class of Alpha Gamma Delta at the University of South Carolina. There is great diversity in their Carolina experiences—from first year students who are looking to make a mark, all the way to seniors who have already served the university in major leadership roles. My hope is that this group of women will raise the already high bar for what it means to be a sorority woman at South Carolina and rejuvenate our entire community with their excitement."

The Fraternity is proud to announce that two new colonies were established at St. Joseph's College in New York in late February.

St. Joseph's College has two campuses—Brooklyn and Long Island. When installed, two separate collegiate chapters of Alpha Gamma Delta will be added to our chapter roll. International Council is saddened to announce that Past Grand President LaVerne Taylor Flanagan entered Chapter Grand on January 2, 2012. An initiate of Gamma Delta Chapter-Auburn University, LaVerne served on Grand Council (now called International Council) for 15 years, including seven years as Grand Vice President-Alumnae and eight years as Grand President. In addition to serving on Grand Council from 1976-1991, LaVerne previously volunteered as a National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) delegate, Foundation Trustee, International Panhellenic Committee member and Gamma Delta Alumnae Chapter President. LaVerne wore the Crescent of Epsilon Pi with Diamonds.

Although over 20 collegiate chapters were installed during her tenure as Grand President, LaVerne's presidency was a challenging time for fraternities and sororities, as public opinion focused on social issues and student abuses. In her keynote address at the 1991 International Convention, LaVerne challenged every member and chapter to focus on academic standards, true sisterhood, values and ethics. She believed focusing on the Fraternity's Ritual was important for Alpha Gamma Delta to be successful. "Our Ritual is the glue of continuity which binds us together through generations," she said. "By living closer to our Ritual and our Purpose, by adhering to the vows we took at the time of our Initiation, by living up to the ideals and values given to us by our Founders, our lives would be enriched, our goals more easily reached, the negativism of the media and many universities and college faculty and administrators would be dispelled."

A natural leader, LaVerne was also an active volunteer in her local community where she was an officer in the Women's Club of Auburn, Medical Auxiliary, Gardeners Club and Auburn United Way Board. In addition to serving on several church committees, she taught Sunday school for many years. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the LaVerne Taylor Flanagan Endowment Scholarship at the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation. Sympathy cards may be mailed to Alpha Gamma Delta International Headquarters to be collected and forwarded to the family.

Alpha Gamma Delta Fraternity will deeply miss and always appreciate LaVerne's heartfelt commitment to the Fraternity. We will keep her family in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

ALPHA GAMMA DELTA INTRODUCES NEW VISUAL IDENTITY AND WEBSITE

Alpha Gamma Delta is pleased to announce the launch of a new website, visual identity and brand message—Live with Purpose. View the website at www.alphagammadelta.org.

"Alpha Gamma Delta is a relevant, values-based organization that encourages sisters to be there for one another, take care of themselves and their communities and stand for something greater than themselves," said Stephannie Sack Bailey, Executive Director. "Live with Purpose accurately reflects these ideals and we are excited to introduce the new brand message and website to the fraternal community."

The brand message, Live with Purpose, was inspired by the Alpha Gamma Delta Purpose, a set of ideals that guide Alpha Gamma Delta throughout their lives. It is reflective of the strong, progressive organization while staying true to the Fraternity's ideals and traditions. Additionally, Live with Purpose is universal; there is no defined way in which a member can effectively live with Purpose. It is up to the member to absorb the 10 lines, decide for herself what each line means to her and determine her own plan to incorporate those values into her life. Watch a short video about the brand message and visual identity here: www.alphagammadelta.org/alphagams/blog.

Focusing on member-driven content and sharing the stories of our sisters, the new website is interactive, informative and engaging. A new feature has been introduced—Let's Talk—that demonstrates how members and friends of Alpha Gamma Deltas are living with Purpose. In addition, we've developed a public section of the website—Alpha Gams—that is intended for members of Alpha Gamma Delta. By clicking on "Alpha Gams," sisters can read the latest news and information about the Fraternity and its members, connect with sisters in their area, read our blog and share ideas.

ALPHA GAMMA DELTA INITIATES NEW MEMBERS AT SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY

(INDIANAPOLIS) Alpha Gamma Delta Fraternity officially reunited with the Greek community at Syracuse University with the Initiation of the Alpha Chapter colony members on Saturday, November 20, 2010. Alpha Gamma Delta joins 12 other NPC groups on Syracuse University's campus. Syracuse University is home to the founding chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta.

Collegians from Zeta Beta-Lehigh University and Zeta Eta-Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute served as members of the initiating team. Jackie Brannon Stutts, International President, served as the Installing Officer.

"It was a momentous experience to bestow the gift of Alpha Gamma Delta to the new initiates of our Alpha Chapter," Jackie said. "They have an immense drive to pave a path for a wonderful chapter, just like the first Alpha Chapter members of Alpha Gamma Delta did so long ago."

Led by Toastmistress Stephannie Sack Bailey, Executive Director of Alpha Gamma Delta Fraternity, the Feast of Roses banquet was an event to remember. Held at the Nicholas J. Pirro Convention Center, parents, members and friends of Alpha Gamma Delta joined together for this celebration of sisterhood. In addition to toasts to our Alma Mater, Founders, Initiates and Fraternity, the new initiates gave a multimedia presentation about their colony experience.

The new chapter was presented with Ritual and recruitment materials from the Fraternity. The Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation announced it would be giving a $1,000 scholarship to a member of the chapter next fall. In addition, thanks to a donation from alumna Sandy Kinney, Upsilon Chapter-University of Oklahoma, the Foundation will be able to provide a $2,500 Alpha Chapter collegiate scholarship in each of the next four years. The gift is in memory of Sandy's mother, Betty Packard Kinney, a 1939 initiate of Alpha Chapter at Syracuse University.

The new chapter will participate in Formal Recruitment this January with the other NPC groups at Syracuse.

Alpha Gamma Delta was founded in 1904 at Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York as a women's fraternity dedicated to scholarship, leadership and community service.
