Sisters Selected for Australian Adventure
Shannon O'Nale and Kimberly Winchester, both from Epsilon Zeta Chapter-Arkansas State University, were recently rewarded for their outstanding leadership ability with a trip to Australia. The trip was sponsored through the Global Student Leader (GSL) program, which rewards the most outstanding student leaders at ASTATE with a once in a lifetime opportunity. This program advances the proposition in the ASTATE mission statement that we prepare students in challenging and diverse ways to become more productive global citizens. The GSL program pays for everything for the students, including their plane tickets, meals, and lodging. Natalie Eskew is the Coordinator for Student Services Orientation and Yearbook of Arkansas State, is an alumni of the Epsilon Zeta Chapter, and was the advisor on the trip to Australia. Kimberly Winchester speaks of her GSL experience, "I felt so blessed to be selected for the GSL trip to Australia. When I found out I would be going with my pledge sister Shannon and have an alumni, Natalie, as our advisor, I was even more excited." The three sisters traveled to many different cities in Australia, including Sydney, Canberra (the capital city of Australia), and Katoomba. In the Blue Mountains, the three sisters got to take a picture in front of the famous rock formation known as the "three sisters" in Katoomba, Australia. They got to see numerous famous sites, such as the Sydney Opera House, Manly Beach, Bondi Beach and the Darling Harbour Aquarium and Wildlife Center.

100th Anniversary Chapter
Installation Date: March 12, 1909
(Celebrated Anniversary in 2009)
Held at the beautiful Newcastle Golf course, guests were met by collegians, who set the stage by greeting the guests wearing vintage clothing from the last 100 years. Iotas came from everywhere to celebrate this momentous event. There were a couple of tables of Iota Chapter sisters who had come as a group from California, and every table had women who had traveled from other states or at least the other side of the mountains to be with their sisters. Honored guests were Benita Wilson Dick, trustee from the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, and Jackie Brannon Stutts, International President, who came across country to present Iota Chapter with two wonderful gifts. Benita gave the collegians a one-time $1,000 scholarship, and Jackie gave the chapter a copy of their charter. Possibly the most exciting part of the festivities, however, came with the viewing of the centennial video, which was produced by the alumnae chapter. The past 100 years in photos and narration brought laughter, some tears and much applause from the delighted audience as they experienced the story of the chapter over all this time and realized that, as the video said, not much has changed besides hairdos and hemlines. Each attendee found a copy of the video at her place on the table. After the luncheon, many alumnae went back to the chapter house where collegians served coffee with the special chocolate-dipped ΑΓΔ cookies that they have at the Final Preference party during Recruitment.

Delta Chapter at the University of Minnesota had two centennial celebrations—one during International Reunion Day (IRD) in April and another one on February 11, 2008. The centennial celebration at IRD united sisters from the Minnesota area as they visited the chapter house for tours. In February, people from all over the area—faculty, police, legislators, members from other Greek organizations and Alpha Gam alumnae—came to the Alpha Gamma Delta chapter house. Enjoying refreshments and sifting through old photographs, it was truly a community-focused affair.

(Celebrated Anniversary in 2008)
Utilizing the theme “100 Years of Beauty; Nothing can compare,” alumnae of Epsilon Chapter at the University of Kentucky traveled from across the country to celebrate their chapter’s 100th birthday on October 3 through 5, 2008. From a reception that united Alpha Gams of all ages and backgrounds to a historic and interactive house tour, all Alpha Gams who attended truly cherished this centennial celebration. With roses in hand, pearls around their necks and badges over their hearts, they found that it doesn’t take a century to create a sisterhood, but instead, it takes a special sisterhood to last a century.

Proud members of Zeta Chapter–Ohio University celebrated their centennial anniversary on April 19-21, 2008. Over 300 women traveled to the Ohio University campus from 23 states, with one family having three generations of Alpha Gams represented. Highlights of the event included a speech from Paula Gallup Little, past International Vice President-Alumnae, a bequest left from Barbara Caldwell of Zeta Chapter for $250,000 to the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation for an endowment for a scholarship and recognition of Inez Winland, Zeta Chapter’s Chapter Housing Supervisor, for her 26 years of loyalty and commitment to the young women in the chapter house.

Fulfilling the line "To develop and prize health and vigor of body."
Zeta Delta-Towson University
Our chapter prides ourselves on staying healthy and taking care of our bodies. Early in the semester, we took part in an American Diabetes Association walk to support our philanthropy. We walked the perimeter of the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, not only raising awareness for diabetes but also exercising as a group. Additionally, we encourage all members to exercise by completing their study hours in the gym or during a fitness class.
- Leigh Raskin
Beta Iota-Eastern Illinois University
Beta Iota Chapter members take pride in their efforts to stay healthy and active on campus. Members run, walk or workout together for fitness. Our members are also very passionate about intramurals and participate in all sports to stay in shape and active on campus. Beta Iota Chapter has joined with the campus police department to prepare a self defense class on campus. We feel it is necessary to know the basics to protect yourself and help others with safety issues. Beta Iota Chapter has also taken steps to educate members about diabetes. The chapter gave a scholarship for a child to attend diabetes camp. Members have also made cards and bracelets for kids at the camp.
- Kelsey Smith
Gamma Omicron-Eastern Kentucky University
Health and vigor of body is very important to our chapter. We preserve these assets in our chapter together. Our chapter is very active in intramural sports and we are very proud to say that on our campus, we have won the Greek Week “All Sports” Award the past 10 out of the past 11years. This past year, our chapter also placed first in Sigma Alpha Epsilon’s mini-golf tournament, Tau Kappa Epsilon and IOTA’s kickball tournament and also in Chi Omega’s dodge ball tournament on our campus. We also hold the title of Eastern Kentucky’s intramural dodge ball champions for two years in a row! Each member of our chapter plays a part in winning that award. Whether we are playing soccer, dodge ball, basketball or volleyball, you can always find Alpha Gams in the crowd, cheering on our sisters or all suited up and ready to play!
- Melissa Drinkard
Zeta Sigma-Northwood University
Fall term was definitely one of the busiest terms this year! The ladies of Zeta Sigma Chapter have been busy planning for work weekend and Formal Recruitment in addition to focusing on school and other campus-related activities. During Northwood’s annual auto show, five of the women on Team Mini won the award for Most Creative and Best European Walk Around. Additionally, four of our sisters organized and participated in powder puff football where they defeated the freshmen girls. Furthermore, three of our women are serving as Publications Chair, Events Chair and Chief Finance Officer for the Style Show this year. As the term ended, we all studied and worked hard to ace our final exams so we could enjoy Thanksgiving break. We look forward to next term because of the sisterhoods and CORs that are planned which will deepen old bonds and create new ones.
- Pahoua Vang
Gamma Beta-Florida State University
The ladies of Gamma Beta Chapter have been working hard to stay fit and healthy throughout the year. Many of them go to the gym together regularly and maintain healthy diets. They also participate in the college’s intramural league which includes flag football, kickball, swimming and tennis, among others. The members of each team practice together during the week improving skill in the sports and strength and endurance within themselves. Members also participate in ROTC, 5Ks and other Greek organizations’ philanthropies which require calorie burning through exercise and fitness such as a dance competition and events that include field activities and more.
- Alicia Adams
Gamma Upsilon-University of Montevallo
Once again, Gamma Upsilon Chapter participated in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Walk held in Birmingham, Alabama. Not only did our chapter raise over $1,500 to go towards diabetes awareness, but each member also participated in the one-mile walk to show our support for the cause. Later that month, Chi Omega Fraternity held their first annual Walk for Wishes, in which Alpha Gamma Delta was the only Greek organization to participate. Both of these walks were for a great cause and got us moving!
- Lydia Wimberly
Mu-Brenau University
To support the Walk to 2010 Challenge, at International Reunion Day (IRD) we held our event at Little Mulberry Park. We had pedometers and water bottles that we gave away as favors to our guests. During Greek Week in the spring and this fall, we were involved in several physical activities including an obstacle coarse, dodge ball, flag football and tug of war. With our skills, we placed first place overall in Greek Week this fall.
- Julie Singleton
Beta Xi-Purdue University
At Beta Xi Chapter, developing health and vigor of body in our members is extremely important to us. One way we have accomplished this is by increasing our participation in intramural athletics. At the end of last year we ranked number two in the all-sorority league intramurals, and so far this fall we have already boosted our ranking to number one! Our chapter has participated in nearly every sport that Purdue has to offer and we have competed in three championship games. We intend to continue to participate in (and win!) many more games in the upcoming semester. Additionally, we have also been encouraging dietary health among chapter members. Our Personal Development Coordinator has been trying to incorporate healthier and vegetarian meal plans into our house menu and she has created wonderful posters about healthy eating habits which can be found around the chapter house.
- Sarah Cometa
Theta Mu-University of North Carolina at Wilimington
Through experiences that Alpha Gamma Delta sister’s share, the most impacting events to participate in are those involving philanthropic giving. Seeing the impact that our Fraternity makes among diabetic people in need continually influences us to keep giving to others while maintaining a healthy status of our own. Individual personal development within Alpha Gamma Delta is greatly formed through the unique qualities of each of your sisters. We keep each other happy and healthy with our loving sisterhood. Each sister influences the other, in numerous ways because we Alpha Gamma Deltas always strive to attain a higher standard and therefore improve our lives, the lives of others all around us and the communities that we live in.
- Rachael Mott
Delta Iota-California State University, Chico
We strive “to develop and prize health and vigor of body” as much as possible. During one of our many sisterhoods this semester, we held a Zumba exercise class at the house. It was fun dancing and exercising all together! Also, the sisters have been utilizing a brand new recreation center on campus. Whether its Zumba, yoga, kick boxing or cardio on the elliptical, we get fit together!
- Sarah Carpenter
Theta Delta-North Georgia College and State University
When our sisters play any intramural game or visit the gym, we are living up to the Purpose line that says: “To develop and prize health and vigor of body.” We are competitive in every sport we play, attempting to bring each title home for Theta Delta Chapter. When we bring home the big wins, our sisters are excited to know that we are the most talented group of women on campus! Many sisters make trips to the gym to work out together, pushing each other to develop and prize our health and vigor of body. If someone needs to find a gym partner, they need look no farther than one of their sisters always there beside them!
- Ashley Dodd
Zeta Alpha-Eastern Michigan University
This year, our Activities Coordinator developed an “activity point of the week” which varies but included going to Eastern Michigan's REC-IM in letters, studying in the library with sisters and eating lunch at the Student Center. This enables us to interact with the university, while supporting Alpha Gamma Delta and maintaining healthy lifestyles. We worked hard at intramurals this semester. We exemplified the Purpose with an undefeated intramural flag football preseason. This semester, for the first time, we held a Dance-a-Thon at Eastern Michigan’s Recreational Complex where students danced for 12 hours with proceeds going to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and entry fee for observers (canned foods) donated to SOS Community Services. Zeta Alpha Chapter strives to include health and vigor of body into our every day lives as representatives of Alpha Gamma Delta at Eastern Michigan University.
-Megan Rice
Alpha Beta-University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
Alpha Beta Chapter has used the Alpha Gamma Delta Purpose to achieve great feats. The ladies of Alpha Gamma Delta’s variety team during Greek Week worked endless nights to take home the first place trophy for their unique and skillful dance, aiding in our 2nd place victory overall. Greek Week brought out the strength and athleticism of chapter members, as one of our very own placed in the top five in the annual 5k race. We are proud of our sisters for their accomplishments as they work towards maintaining healthy bodies.
- Kristen Wehling
Epsilon-University of Kentucky
“He who has health, has hope. And he who has hope, has everything” (Proverbs). Not only do the sisters of Alpha Gamma Delta at the University of Kentucky think about this, we cherish our health and sisters on a day-to-day basis. Epsilon Chapter continues to participate in vigorous activities and shine on and off the field. The UK squirrels received second place overall in the soccer intramurals this fall, held a sisterhood event dedicated to apple picking and pursued different ways of going green. Living a long, healthy life with wonderful sisters by our side is not only established as a key part of our Purpose, it has become and will continue to be a way of life for Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta.
- Katie Hettinger
Epsilon Zeta-Arkansas State University
When our women aren’t busy hitting the books, they can be found hitting a hole-in-one or turning cartwheels for our beloved Arkansas State Red Wolves. Epsilon Zeta Chapter is absolutely overflowing with athletes! Our sisters cheer, run track, golf, dance, twirl and cross court to celebrate their Red Wolves and maintain their health and vigor of body. Alpha Gam intramurals are also always a fun way to stay in shape. Our flag football, volleyball and soccer teams had such a blast this semester! One of the most interesting and competitive ways to stay in shape, we’ve found is to participate in step show. This year, our sisters practiced for months to compete in the Step the Stage on Fire Homecoming Competition. It was a tough battle and we placed second in the competition. Among one of the more popular ways to keep the heart pumping have been 5ks, as there have been many, many 5ks and charity walks on campus this semester. It’s been an excellent semester and we hope we continue to keep our study habits and healthy routines strong and have tons of fun with our sisters while doing it!
- Abby Smith
Gamma Alpha-University of Georgia
As members of the Gamma Alpha Chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta, we strive to take advantage of the campus facilities in order “to develop and prize health and vigor of body.” We join in our sisterhood’s intramural tennis, flag football, soccer, softball and basketball teams along with hopping in a car and traveling to the school gym, the Ramsey Center, to play racquet ball, jog or take classes such as Zumba or Pilates together as sisters.
- Natalie Wirtz
Gamma Xi-Murray State University
This past fall, the sisters of Gamma Xi Chapter hosted our annual philanthropy called Rock-A-Thon. The look-a-like, dance and lip-sync competition was held in our campus student center and all the proceeds went to the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation. This year’s Rock-A-Thon was one of the best we’d ever had, raising over $8,100 and hosting over 400 guests. Our philanthropy is promoting our Purpose “to develop and prize health and vigor of body” because annually we educate our guests about juvenile diabetes. Learning about the effects of diabetes allows our sisters to promote a healthy lifestyle to everyone around.
- Jenni Parrent
Zeta Tau-Seton Hall University
The Zeta Tau Chapter is an upbeat, energetic and determined group of young women. We realize how lucky we are to be happy and healthy; therefore, we are always getting involved in projects to give back to those in need. This past year we have participated in two juvenile diabetes walks, co-sponsored a blood drive at Seton Hall University, sorted food a local food bank, cleaned up a park and we have many more activities planned. All of these rewarding experiences have helped us grow as individuals and as a chapter and to appreciate how fortunate we are.
- Laura Maddaluna
Theta Tau-Belmont University
Our chapter was very excited this fall about participating in many events that helped us develop and prize our health and vigor of body. Many sisters participated in intramural sports on campus, against fellow Greek and non-Greek organizations. We played flag football, basketball and racquetball. Many sisters also participate in the annual Turkey Trott, a 5k walk/run around the Belmont community. In addition to intramurals, our chapter has a few members who joined the Belmont rugby club team and many of our sisters take advantage on the campus workout facilities or group fitness programs. We participated in Nashville’s JDRF walk for the third year in a row, allowing us to promote our local philanthropy while also getting a head start on the Walk to 2010. We recently updated our Activities Recognition System (ARS) to reward girls who “develop and prize health and vigor of body,” along with other lines of our Purpose. With this newly updated ARS, we are anticipating another good intramural turnout and plan on continuing to value our health.
- Morgan Caldwell
Gamma Delta-Auburn University
This fall our intramural team was excited to take second place in the Panhellenic flag football championship. Last academic year we won the All-Sports Trophy, and we are planning on bringing the heat again this year to keep our title! Intramurals are a great way to exercise while having a wonderful time teaming up with your sisters. Also, as a chapter-wide activity, we participated in an exercise class at a local gym. It was so much fun that it will surely become an annual tradition!
- Martha Ann Huey
Alpha Upsilon-Central Michigan University
Starting next semester, Alpha Upsilon Chapter is starting a new program that requires each active member to earn a certain number of points in several categories, including one focusing on developing and prizing health of body. Each member will have to earn at least one point in this category by doing things such as working out with another sister, attending a work out class (one that is not being taken for college credit), or working out at a facility and obtaining the signature of an employee there. We are looking to hold ourselves and each other more accountable in each aspect of her life, including bettering our bodies.
- Gabrielle MacDonald
Zeta Omicron- Kettering University
“To develop and prize health and vigor of body” means a lot to our chapter. We actively took part in the Breast Cancer Awareness Week activities which included a Zumba workout class. We also try and incorporate physical activity into sisterhood events including sisterhood workout times. We were also able to use our skills at Zumba to perform at the Greek Week mock rock and the routine was very widely appreciated. This also helped us improve our campus image. The chapter has also won the intramural indoor soccer and volleyball championships in the women’s league.
- Tara Lijewski
Theta Upsilon-Georgetown College
Theta Epsilon Chapter is always striving for a healthy lifestyle. We have had many events this fall to contribute to our healthy lifestyles. Our sisters have participated in intramural games, a healthy eating program and a diabetes walk. We find that it easy to stay fit and healthy when we have the support of our sisters with us. The healthy eating program included facts of how to eat and showed us the “portion distortion” in our everyday lives. We have learned a lot about how to eat healthier and live a more active lifestyle. Sisters also attended many of the inaugural season USA Jaguar football games. We are excited to continue to develop and prize health and vigor of body.
- Kristen Griffin
Beta Eta-Southern Illinois University
Beta Eta Chapter strives to maintain health and vigor of bodies as individuals and as a chapter. We have recently held a sisterhood volleyball tournament. We also participated in the annual Panhellenic powder puff games and in other Greek chapters’ philanthropic athletic events. Once a year we hold our own Alpha Gam Slam, a volleyball tournament which raises money for the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation. Many sisters participate in exercise activities on a daily basis. Some have even participated in marathons!
- Kelsey Sloan
Gamma Tau-University of West Georgia
This past semester Alpha Gams at the University of West Georgia had two intramural teams to make the championship round in both flag football and soccer. We are also proud to have a new sister on the four-time national champion UWG co-ed cheerleading squad. Our sisters try to keep healthy minds and bodies through striving to be positive role models for younger sisters, friends and acquaintances.
- Alyson Chester
Xi Chapter-Illinois Wesleyan University
Xi Chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta is an extremely active chapter, not just with our involvement in the community, but also with our participation in extracurricular activities. Our members participate in a variety of physical challenging activities, including collegiate sports (basketball, golf, track and field, softball, swimming and the dance team), as well as intramural sports teams. Our Alpha Grabba Rebound intramural basketball team enjoys nightly games and practices during the spring. In the fall, the Alpha Gams took to the football field and competed in Sigma Chi’s “Sig Bowl,” a fun opportunity for the four local sororities and athletic teams to compete in touch football. This year we went home with the trophy. Finally, many of our members participated in the Bloomington-Normal 5k Jingle Bell Run, which raised money for arthritis.
- Jessica Hinterlong
Zeta Zeta Chapter-Worchester Polytechnic Institute
Zeta Zeta Chapter has strived to develop and prize health and vigor of body by starting Alpha Gam Pilates this A-Term. Once every week, we trek up the hill with our yoga mats to work out with our personal instructor, Ruth. She helps the sisters with a Pilate’s routine, a strenuous but rewarding core body exercise that tones the body and builds muscle. It is tons of fun and we enjoy working out with our sisters because they are so supportive and encourage us to try harder to reach our goals. We also continue to participate in intramural sports including bowling, basketball and volleyball. We always have a good time exercising and working out with our sisters.
- Amanda Keller
Gamma Psi-University of North Alabama
Gamma Psi Chapter always finds value in our abilities and strengths especially when we took home the first place trophy in the campus-wide step show charity event for United Way this fall. We saw the effect of energy and strengths during Homecoming week when we received first place for the week’s competitions and events. We developed our abilities in intramurals this fall when we competed against campus organizations playing different sports. We look forward to future opportunities to exhibit our vitality through the unity expressed whenever we compete as sisters.
- Skylar L. Holland
Delta Tau-Chapman University
We develop and prize health and vigor of body through Sporty Squirrel, a weekly raffle system to which sisters submit their names for every hour of exercise completed. They do this in the hope of winning a gift certificate to a local health food store. This friendly competition encourages sisters to make regular trips to the gym, often accompanied by fellow Alpha Gams.
- Alexandra Sgambati
Epsilon Lambda-University of Central Missouri
Epsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta encourages all members to be healthy and active. Our chapter is very involved in intramural sports. We participate in everything from flag football to bowling. Many of our girls make workout dates with one another. The Risk Management Coordinator offers many tips in making health decisions in college life. All of our girls encourage one another to have a high self-image and work to be the best they can be.
- Morgan Anderson
Beta Omicron-Illinois State University
Outside of the classroom, we readily participate in bi-weekly programs lead by our personal development chair. These programs include: information about healthy relationships, self-defense classes and alcohol awareness. Through these programs we have emphasized high respect for ourselves and sisters which has resulted in a positive reflection of our chapter. In addition to being educated on a positive emotional state, our chapter values the importance of an active life-style. We recently had two teams of five girls participate in the Greek Body Challenge in which the sisters encouraged each other to participate in group workout sessions and were educated on healthy eating habits. Together our chapter has been able to uphold and improve on our individual body images.
- Karalyn Greiter
Zeta Nu-Alma College
Many of our sisters are big fans of being physically fit! Whether they are part of the cheerleading squad, marching band, color guard or dance company, most sisters do fun activities for exercise. For our sisters who don’t have time to join an organization, many of them take advantage of our recreational center to work out. Some simply do it to be healthy, while other do it for training. One of our sisters ran the full Detroit marathon just a few months ago! Our sisters enjoy working hard in all their endeavors, hoping to improve themselves and each other.
- Lauren Deutscher
Gamma Zeta-University of Memphis
As our new members were recruited, Gamma Zeta Chapter used members, young and old, to compete in many intramural sports. Flag football turned out to be a huge success! Many of our members regularly go to the gym and work out together. This not only encourages a healthy body but also helps develop a stronger bond among sisters. Alpha Gam encouragement is never far away when it comes to staying healthy!
- Ashley Pembleton
Delta Rho-Sonoma State University
We were pleased to welcome 50 new women into our sisterhood this fall and show them what it means to balance health with academic and social life. We enjoyed several programs dealing with women’s health issues, skin care and personal training. Delta Rho Chapter stayed active by participating in powder puff football and is currently getting excited for their annual Lip Jam event. Our members are proud to organize an event that consistently generates significant donations to the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation through a fun-filled dance competition. We are looking forward to the coming year with more opportunities to develop and prize health and vigor of body while continuing to gain understanding in the world around us.
- Casie Stocking
Sigma-University of Illinois
In Sigma Chapter, Alpha Gams have many opportunities to develop healthy bodies and minds many sisters participate in weekly work out classes as a fun way to exercise and spend time with one another. Also, intramural sports are popular in our chapter. We participated in outdoor soccer this semester and everyone really enjoyed this. Soccer games attracted sisters from different pledge classes and served as a great way to bond while getting a workout. Our chapter even went undefeated for the regular season and made it to the semifinal match. Developing healthy bodies is an important part of our everyday lives.
- Jenny Reed
Alpha Pi-Wayne State University
Although the stress focus is usually on the physical aspect, in order to live a healthy life, mental health is just as important as physical health. The women of Alpha Pi Chapter attended a presentation to learn how to help decrease their stress levels. The Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provided this presentation, which is a service that Wayne State University provides to all of their students. CAPS not only provides students with ways to cope with stress but also provides help and advice when it comes to anxiety, depression and relationship matters. The chapter decided that learning about stress would be most beneficial since finals were approaching. As a chapter we learned how to turn our most stressful situations into one with a positive outcome.
